Have you ever wondered why creating a budget is so easy, while sticking to that budget is so hard? One common pitfall when it comes to budgeting basics is forgetting to account for all expenses. Sure, your car payment and mortgage are easy bills to remember – but what about smaller items like the amount you pay for your gym membership or babysitter? These are monthly costs that affect your bottom line, and adding them to your budget will help you stay on track. For more tips and tricks, read on!
I have some SERIOUS spring fever, and I’m ready for it to burn off into summertime! Sunshine, blue skies and sandals are calling my name. Doesn’t a sandy tropical beach sound amazing? Or for that matter, a beach right here in Alaska if it means some rest and relaxation! Unfortunately, my bills aren’t planning a vacation anytime soon, and budgeting for fun can be difficult. Whether you’re a single person, couple or growing family, everybody has expenses that tie them down – but it’s not impossible to cut yourself free!
Most people have a vague idea of what credit scores are. Something to do with how well you pay your bills, right? On the surface, your credit score may not seem too important – but if you’re ever in need of a loan, this number can make a big difference in how much your borrowed money costs. Take a look through the info below, and then come chat with CU1 to learn more!
There are a few chores around my house that I dread doing – and spring cleaning is a big one. On the other hand, who doesn’t love discovering a jacket you’d packed away with $10 in the pocket?! I get the same rush of boundless joy when there’s spare change in the couch or when I find a soggy, crumpled dollar bill in the washing machine. I imagine this is what treasure hunters or archeologists feel like.
Get ready folks – I have a serious question for you! How goes the battle with your 2015 resolutions? Are you making progress? Treading water?
On my short list of resolutions, I’m somewhere between treading water and sinking. Each January, I set out to develop an agenda of exciting ideas to achieve – but my dirty secret is that, most often, this list falls by the wayside before February. If you’re in the same boat (don’t worry! I won’t tell!), we can both use some ideas to make the year ahead particularly impactful. Luckily, I’ve found four words to live by: “quit a costly habit!”
It’s a new year – which means new chances, opportunities and goals! If education is on your wish list for 2015, Credit Union 1 would love to help. For almost 30 years, we’ve awarded annual funds to CU1 members via our Bill Countryman Scholarship program. What a great way to enjoy your membership with us AND expand your horizons!

I remember the day I applied for my first loan. I had turned 18, and a credit card offer came in the mail. Since I was new to the world of junk mail, I of course opened and even READ it! The offer came with a credit limit I certainly could not afford as a college student – but I didn’t even consider that. There was a packet of adorable address labels in the envelope, plus I got to choose my own credit card design. SOLD!

Something has been missing from my holiday spirit this week. Our tree is up and decorated, there are lights strung all over the house, gifts wrapped and nativity arranged. I even swapped our normal air freshener for one that smells like Christmas. But something has been missing! I don’t feel filled to the brim with holiday cheer, and it’s been bumming me out.
